What is Scrabble?

Scrabble is a word game for two to four players, played on a 15×15 grid. Each player draws letter tiles and takes turns placing them on the board to form words, crossword-style, using letters already on the board.

Every tile carries a point value based on how common the letter is — common letters like E and A are worth 1 point, while rare ones like Q and Z are worth 10. Certain squares on the board double or triple the value of a letter or an entire word, so where you play matters as much as what you play. The game ends when the tile bag is empty and one player uses their last tile, or when no player can make a legal play — whoever has the highest score at that point wins.

Tips to win at Scrabble

01

Learn the two-letter words

There are only around 100 of them. Knowing all of them lets you play parallel words next to existing ones and slot in tricky letters like Q, X, and Z when nothing else fits.

02

Prioritize premium squares

A triple word score is worth far more than a triple letter score. Plan longer or higher-value words to land on word multipliers rather than letter multipliers.

03

Balance your rack

Holding too many vowels or too many consonants limits what you can play. Aim for a mix of 3–4 vowels, and don't be afraid to exchange tiles if your rack is unplayable.

04

Save your S and blank tiles

They're the most flexible tiles in the bag. Use them to extend existing words or reach bonus squares rather than spending them on the first playable word you see.

05

Play defensively near premium squares

Avoid opening up a triple-word square for your opponent by playing adjacent to it unless you can use the square yourself on the same turn.

06

Track the tile bag

Knowing which high-value letters (Q, Z, X, J) are still unseen helps you decide whether to hold an awkward tile or trade it in.

Scrabble vowel word list

Words made up entirely of vowels — no consonants at all. There are only 6 of them in the dictionary, which makes them some of the most valuable words to memorize for awkward, vowel-heavy racks.

Words without vowels

121 words in the dictionary use no A, E, I, O, or U at all — most lean on Y as their only vowel-like sound.

Words that start and end with the same letter

11,691 words in the dictionary start and end on the same letter — too many to list in full here, so here's a filterable sample of the first 500, alphabetically.
