ScrabbleWise ("we," "us," or "the site") provides free word-game tools — word finders, solvers, and word lists — at scrabblewise.com. ScrabbleWise is operated by PRGRS Group, which is the data controller responsible for the information described in this policy (see our Legal Notice for our business address). This policy explains what information we collect when you use the site and how we use it. We've tried to write it in plain language rather than dense legal boilerplate.

Information we collect

ScrabbleWise doesn't require an account, and we don't ask you to submit personal information to use any of our tools. Letters you type into a solver are processed to generate results and are not stored or linked to you.

We do collect a limited amount of information automatically:

  • Usage data — pages visited, time on page, referring site, device and browser type, and approximate location derived from IP address. This is standard server-log and analytics information and isn't tied to your identity.
  • Cookies and similar technologies — small files used to remember preferences and to support analytics and, where enabled, advertising, as described below.
  • Information you send us directly — if you email us, we'll have whatever you include in that message (e.g. your email address and its contents).

Analytics and advertising

We use, or intend to use, third-party services such as Google Analytics to understand how visitors use ScrabbleWise, and may show ads through a service such as Google AdSense to help keep the tools free. These services can set cookies and use similar technologies to collect information about your visits to this and other websites, and may use that information to serve ads based on your browsing activity.

You can opt out of personalized advertising through Google Ads Settings , and out of Google Analytics tracking using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Most browsers also let you block or delete cookies directly in their settings.

Analytics cookies are only set once you've consented to them via the cookie banner. You can change your choice at any time using the link in the footer of any page.

International data transfers

Some of the service providers we use, such as Google and Netlify (our hosting provider), are based in — or process data in — countries outside your own, including the United States. Where this involves transferring personal data out of the UK or European Economic Area, we rely on those providers' compliance with recognized transfer safeguards, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

How we use information

  • To operate, maintain, and improve the site and its tools.
  • To understand aggregate traffic patterns and usage trends.
  • To detect and prevent abuse, such as automated scraping or denial-of-service traffic.
  • To respond to messages you send us.
  • To display advertising that helps keep ScrabbleWise free, where enabled.

We do not sell your personal information.

Data sharing

We share information only with the service providers that help us run the site — for example, hosting, analytics, and advertising providers — and only to the extent needed for them to perform those functions. We do not share information with third parties for their own independent marketing purposes.

For the Overdraw leaderboard specifically, the name and score you submit are stored using Netlify Blobs — a storage service from Netlify, the same provider that hosts this site, rather than a separate third-party database.

Children's privacy

ScrabbleWise is a general-audience site and is not directed at children under 16 — the default digital age of consent under EU/UK GDPR, though some countries set a lower age (14 in Spain, where PRGRS Group is based). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children below the applicable age of consent in their country. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we'll remove it.

Data retention

Aggregate analytics data is retained only as long as needed to understand site usage trends. Messages you send us are kept as long as needed to address them and are not retained indefinitely. If you submit a name to the Overdraw daily leaderboard, it's kept for 3 days and then automatically deleted — unless your score is that day's highest, in which case your name, score, and the words and letters you played are kept indefinitely as part of our public Hall of Fame archive.

Your rights

If data protection law such as the UK/EU GDPR applies to you, you have the right to:

  • Ask what personal data we hold about you and get a copy of it (access).
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data (rectification).
  • Ask us to delete your data (erasure).
  • Ask us to restrict or object to certain processing.
  • Request a portable copy of data you provided to us (portability).
  • Withdraw consent at any time for anything we process on that basis — for example, analytics cookies, using the link in the footer.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national or regional data protection supervisory authority — for example, the ICO in the UK, or your local EU member state authority.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time as the site evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "last updated" date at the top of this page.
